Kate Campbell has been Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of San Francisco and on the piano and music theory faculty of Westminster Conservatory of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, Crowden Center for Music in the Community in Berkeley, CA and San Francisco Community Music Center. She is an active member of the Music Teachers' Association of California, and now offers private lessons in her home studio in North Oakland. Her students' recent accomplishments include high placement in concerto competitions, highest marks in statewide juries and festivals, achieving honors in the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music exams, and participation in community-oriented fundraising concerts.
My mission is for all my students to enjoy, understand, and play music independently for the rest of their lives. I work to foster creative and versatile musicians by focusing on excellent technique, reading skills, and music fundamentals. These are the tools that enable students to express their musical intentions and follow any musical path they choose. I teach the skills of each piece, not just “note rote.” We look for patterns and listen critically. We build strength, good posture, and agility with technical exercises. Everything is personalized and age/level appropriate.
Piano lessons include a "mostly-classical" music curriculum that begins with method books and continues with pedagogically appropriate classical repertoire. Favorite songs or other pieces are included based on demand and individual discussion with the student. In order to form a whole musician, piano lessons also include technique exercises, music theory, and ear-training. Students attend weekly lessons, gather for studio class a few times a year, and participate in a studio recital. Students may also participate in additional performance opportunities, such as the Certificate of Merit program and the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music exams.
Prospective students are welcome to schedule a free interview and mini-lesson. For more information, contact Kate.
